Soumak weaving produces a flat, tightly wrapped surface rather than a pile, and this piece uses that crispness to its advantage. A light gold ground carries mirrored ikat-style medallions, feathered palmettes, and stepped botanical forms in rust, sage, caramel, aqua, and ivory, every motif outlined cleanly. The technique traces back to the Caucasus, where wefts were wrapped around the warp threads to build a raised, textural face and a reversible cloth. Woven entirely in wool, it lies flat and works well in a room where a thick pile would be too much.

Individually woven by skilled artisans, each rug is a truly one-of-a-kind piece. This authentic craftsmanship results in a distinct work of art built to last for generations.

Care Flat weaves collect less soil than pile rugs but can shift underfoot, so use a pad. Vacuum with suction only and avoid beater bars, which can catch the wrapped wefts, and turn or flip the rug periodically to even out wear.

Construction Woven by hand in wool using the soumak technique, in which supplementary wefts are wrapped around the warp threads rather than knotted and cut. The result is a flat, durable, reversible fabric with a distinctly ridged surface.

Story Behind the Art: Soumak rugs have a rich history rooted in the Caucasus, Persia (modern Iran), and Anatolia (Turkey). This flatwoven textile technique dates back centuries, originating from nomadic tribes who used it for rugs, bags, and other functional textiles. Unlike traditional kilims, Soumak rugs feature a unique weft-wrapping technique, creating a textured, embroidered appearance with bold geometric motifs, stylized floral patterns, and tribal symbols. Historically crafted with hand-spun wool and natural dyes, they are known for their durability and vibrant designs. Today, Soumak rugs are also woven in India, valued for their reversible construction and affordability, making them a practical yet stylish choice for modern interiors.
