There is no border on this one, which is unusual and much of its appeal. The field is open celadon and beige, scattered with loosely drawn palmettes, blossoms, and leafy sprays in moss green, denim blue, gold, and flashes of burnt orange. The drawing is deliberately relaxed and the colors sit gently next to each other, in keeping with the Arts and Crafts preference for handmade honesty over polish. Hand-knotted in pure wool, at a size that fits a bedroom or a smaller sitting room.
Individually woven by skilled artisans, each rug is a truly one-of-a-kind piece. This authentic craftsmanship results in a distinct work of art built to last for generations.
Care Vacuum weekly and rotate every six months so the open field wears evenly. Blot spills with a white cloth, and keep the rug out of long stretches of direct sun to protect the softer greens.
Construction Hand-knotted in wool and worked without an outer border so the field runs to the edges, a layout borrowed from Arts and Crafts textiles, where pattern was meant to look drawn rather than framed.

Story Behind the Art: Originating as a protest against mass produced inferior factory products of the 19th century, the Arts and Crafts Movement favored originality and craftsmanship. William Morris, main proponent of the movement, emphasized the use of handcrafts over the use of machinery and introduced a new design sensibility that evoked nature in home interiors through furniture, upholstery, wallpaper and rugs with intricate intertwining fruit, flower, and foliage patterns. The popularity of MorrisÕs rug designs has endured to the current times and stands emblematic of Art & Crafts rugs with their simple, bold, informal design themes rooted in nature. Today, the Arts & Crafts rugs embrace a multitude of styles ranging from the Art Nouveau style (rug patterns with flowing, curvilinear lines and nature-inspired, floral designs), Mission-style as well as geometric patterns inspired by Native American designs, American Prairie style and Caucasian rugs (hand-knotted rugs made in a small, Middle-Eastern region called the Caucasus). Arts and Crafts Rugs' natural motifs and interesting color palette add to their versatility and enduring charm.
