Story Behind the Art: French needlepoint rugs originated in the famous weaving centers of Aubusson and Savonnerie during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. These workshops produced luxurious carpets for royal palaces and aristocratic estates throughout Europe. Unlike hand-knotted carpets, needlepoint rugs were traditionally embroidered onto canvas using specialized techniques known as petit point and gros point. Designs were strongly influenced by classical European art and architecture, often featuring floral medallions, garlands, scrollwork, and elegant pastel color palettes. These decorative carpets were commonly used in salons, grand halls, and formal interiors of European châteaux. By the late twentieth century, Chinese artisans began reproducing French-style needlepoint rugs using traditional craftsmanship while recreating classic Aubusson and Savonnerie designs. Today these rugs continue to capture the beauty of antique French carpets while offering decorative elegance appreciated by modern collectors and interior designers.
