Story Behind the Art : Hand-knotted rugs produced in Pakistan represent the country’s second-largest cottage and small-industry craft, with origins tracing back to the 11th century during Mughal rule. Over generations, artisans mastered the ability to recreate virtually any style of rug, integrating classic motifs such as guls, medallions, paisleys (botehs), traceries, and intricate geometric repeats. Among the most prized varieties are Pak-Persian rugs, known for their exceptional weave density—typically 16 by 18 knots per square inch, resulting in more than 288 KPSI or the widely recognized 300 KPSI quality. This density produces a remarkably durable and long-lasting rug ideal for high-traffic use. Production flourished in the 1970s when demand surged after U.S. trade with Iran was restricted, and Pakistani weavers stepped in to fill the gap. Today, these rugs remain highly valued for their outstanding craftsmanship, diverse design repertoire, and ability to replicate premium Persian aesthetics at accessible price points.
