This impressive 12' x 17'7" hand-knotted wool Sarouk rug is woven at a fine 200 knots per square inch, delivering exceptional clarity of pattern and heirloom-grade durability. The low 0.25" cut pile on a cotton foundation ensures a smooth, grounded feel while preserving intricate detail throughout. The saturated antique rose field is richly filled with an all-over garden design featuring flowing vines, palmettes, and rhythmic curvilinear motifs that unfold evenly across the surface. Deep navy and blue borders frame the composition with floral rosettes and scrolling ornamentation, while accents of sage, aqua, rust, turquoise, brown, and beige introduce layered dimension and movement. Natural abrash—subtle variations in dye and tone found in authentic hand-knotted rugs—adds character and depth, enhancing its vintage appeal. Ideal for luxury estates, formal living rooms, or grand dining rooms, this traditional Persian-style rug makes a commanding design statement while preserving classical integrity.

Story Behind the Art: In the rug trade, “Sarouk” refers to carpets woven in Arak and surrounding villages in central Iran, particularly in the Farahan plains — regions historically recognized for superior craftsmanship. During the 19th century, Sarouk rugs commonly displayed intricate all-over patterns such as Herati and Gul Hennai motifs, typically woven with approximately 100 asymmetric knots per square inch on strong cotton foundations. By the late 1800s, influenced by the grandeur of Tabriz carpets, weavers shifted toward more formal, symmetrical compositions. Factory-produced examples featured large floral medallions with precise architectural balance. This medallion aesthetic dominated production until the post–World War I era. Following WWI, Sarouk artisans introduced a groundbreaking shift: open-field compositions with detached floral sprays gracefully scattered across the background. This innovation became the defining hallmark of the Sarouk style, especially popular in the American rug market throughout the early 20th century. Today, Sarouk-inspired rugs are woven not only in Iran but also in India, Romania, and Pakistan. These global interpretations preserve the lush florals, rich color palettes, and durable construction that collectors and interior designers continue to seek for formal living rooms, estate homes, and traditional interiors across the U.S.
